Genetically manufactured agriculture (GMA) and genetically manufactured organisms (GMOs) are plants and animals that that have been modified and changed from their natural state, using DNA (genes) from
bacteria, fungus and animals.
GM foods were first put on the market in the early 1990s. The first commercially grown genetically modified crop was a tomato which was modified to ripen without softening, by a company called Calgene which is a subsidiary of Monsanto Chemical Company. Today tomatoes are among the leading foods that are genetically altered. The process used to genetically alter tomatoes to give them a longer shelf life is injecting the DNA from pigs into the tomato seeds and tomato plants. This includes tomato catsup, paste, sauce, salsas, sun dried tomatoes and all other tomato bi-products.
